How to Look After Your Lawn
Share
Whether you have grown your lawn from seed, laid turf or inherited a lawn, the simple steps in this guide will help you keep it looking lush and green all year round.
1. Feed Seasonally for Strength and Colour
Just like plants, grass needs nutrients to thrive. A good lawn fertiliser will help strengthen roots, boost colour, and improve resistance to drought and disease.
For ease, you can use a year-round fertiliser which you apply every 3 months.
If you want a more premium feel, use a nitrogen-rich fertiliser to encourage strong growth and vibrant green blades as the growing season starts in spring and a low-nitrogen, high-potassium blend to prepare your lawn for winter and reduce stress from cold and wet conditions.
For best results, apply fertiliser after mowing and water it in well. Avoid feeding during drought or frost.
2. Mow Regularly
Regular mowing keeps your lawn neat and encourages thicker growth but cutting too low can weaken the grass and invite weeds.
- Never remove more than one-third of the grass height in a single cut.
- Keep blades sharp to avoid tearing the grass, which can lead to disease.
- Adjust height seasonally - cut higher in summer to reduce stress and lower in spring and autumn for a tidy finish.
- Leave clippings on the lawn occasionally as they return nutrients to the soil.
3. Aerate Annually to Improve Drainage
Over time, lawns can become compacted, especially in high-traffic areas. This reduces airflow, water penetration, and root development which can prevent your lawn from looking its best.
Aerate once a year in Autumn or Spring using a garden fork or a mechanical aerator/scarifier.
