How to Get The Best Out of Your Lawn Turf

Turf is one of the fastest ways to transform your outdoor space. But to get the best results, it’s not just about choosing the right turf; it’s about laying it properly and caring for it in the early weeks.

In this article, we'll cover everything you need to know to make your turf thrive.

1. Before You Lay: Preparation Is Everything

A well-prepared base is key to quick establishment of new turf.

  • Prepare the ground - rotovate to a depth of 10–15cm, remove large stones and debris, then rake using a soil rake to create a smooth, even surface.
  • Firm the soil - lightly compact the area using a roller or by walking over it in overlapping steps.
  • Feed the soil - apply a pre-turf fertiliser to encourage strong root development.

Our turf is thicker cut and has a mature root system so it will respond particularly well to fertilised soil.

2. Choosing the Right Turf

At Fast Landscaping Supplies, we offer two types of lawn turf to suit different needs. Our Standard Turf is a reliable, all-purpose blend for everyday gardens and landscaping or for a denser, more luxurious feel choose our Premium Turf.

All our turf is grown on DEFRA Grade 1 mineral sands and organic loams and free from plastic netting. It is harvested fresh to order, often overnight in the summer months for peak freshness, and delivered kerbside via forklift-equipped courier for easy unloading.

3. When Your Turf Arrives

Please inspect your turf on arrival. Our turf is cut fresh and quality-checked before dispatch. If there’s a concern, let us know straight away on the same day including photographs.

It is very important that your turf is laid immediately. Turf is a living product, the sooner it is laid the better and faster your results will be. Aim to lay it the same day as delivery.

If unforeseen circumstances cause unavoidable delay, keep rolls in a shaded, cool area and unstack them to allow airflow. Water as needed.

Top laying tips:

  • Use laying boards to avoid damaging freshly laid turf
  • Lay in a brickwork pattern to avoid visible seams

4. Aftercare: The First Few Weeks

Water daily and deeply (unless it’s raining). You want to ensure the roots are kept moist to help them establish. Also minimise foot traffic to prevent damage to newly growing roots.

Wait until the grass reaches 5–8cm before you mow for the first time, then cut to no less than 4cm. Use a sharp blade and avoid scalping.
